Bilgewater, I am the late Dauphin!




In chapter 19 through 33 of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the duke and the dauphin play a significant role. Introducing themselves as the Duke of Bilgewater and the Dauphin of France, these two men board the raft after Huck and Jim leave the Grangerfords'. The Dauphin is about 70 years old, bald, and has gray whiskers, and the Duke was 30 years old. They both had their own stories the duke man used to sell a paste that was meant to remove tartar from teeth but that took off much of the enamel with it. He fled to avoid the locals' ire. The dauphin used to run a temperance revival meeting but had to flee after word got out that he drank. These two, both of them obviously being con artists and decide to team up. They do a Romeo and Juliet play in a town and everyone gets really mad but they escape before they are caught. Then, thy try to scam some girls out of their father's inheritance money.They eventually get tarred and feathered.
